Library Assistant
Job Description

Description:
Performs a variety of duties under the direction of a supervisor, some of a routine clerical nature and some of a professional nature. Supervision is provided by the Director and Assistant Director. Work is learned through on-the-job training, workshops, seminars and continuing education.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
Under the general supervision of the Director, responsible for creating a climate of welcoming and responsive atmosphere of service for all patrons. Provides reference and readerβs advisory services; interacts with the public to create a favorable impression of library services; plans and presents programs. Schedule includes evenings and weekends.
Examples of Duties:
β’ Provides reference and readerβs advisory services to patrons
β’ Understands full range of circulation desk procedures using an automated circulation system
β’ Carries out procedures for notifications of patrons of overdue material
β’ Registers new patrons and maintains records of patron applications
β’ Handles fines, uses the cash register
β’ Uses public catalog, internet, and printers
β’ Assists patrons with computers and software
β’ Transmits faxes and scans documents
β’ Uses copier and computers
β’ Answers telephone
β’ Shelves material
β’ Assist patrons and processes MeL library loan
β’ Solves patron problems encountered during their library visit
β’ Monitors library supplies for ordering
β’ Creates marketing and promotional material
β’ Merchandises books and other library materials to enhance their appeal and promote their use by patrons
β’ Facilitates programming, as needed, in skill set
β’ Inspects library materials for repair and may assist in repairing and/or processing library material
β’ Performs general cleaning duties in the library including shoveling and sweeping sidewalks and taking out garbage.

- Ability to maintain reliable schedule and regular attendance
- Flexibility to adapt to changing work situations and to vary work schedule
- Physical mobility to comfortably lift and move 50 pounds
- Good vision and hearing
- Manual dexterity to operate computer and telephone equipment
- Satisfactory criminal background check
- Willingness to attend community events and training/workshops outside of the library
- Valid driverβs license and personal automobile for job-related transportation
Acceptable Experience and Training:
β’ High school diploma or GED
β’ Graduation from a college or university preferred
β’ Public library experience preferred
β’ Experience with Google apps, Word, Excel, Canva and other application software
β’ Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
