Job Description

Description:

Performs a variety of duties under the direction of a supervisor, some of a routine clerical nature and some of a professional nature.  Supervision is provided by the Director and Assistant Director.  Work is learned through on-the-job training, workshops, seminars and continuing education.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

Under the general supervision of the Director, responsible for creating a climate of welcoming and responsive atmosphere of service for all patrons.  Provides reference and readerโ€™s advisory services; interacts with the public to create a favorable impression of library services; plans and presents programs. Schedule includes evenings and weekends.

Examples of Duties:

โ€ข Provides reference and readerโ€™s advisory services to patrons

โ€ข Understands full range of circulation desk procedures using an automated circulation system

โ€ข Carries out procedures for notifications of patrons of overdue material

โ€ข Registers new patrons and maintains records of patron applications

โ€ข Handles fines, uses the cash register

โ€ข Uses public catalog, internet, and printers

โ€ข Assists patrons with computers and software

โ€ข Transmits faxes and scans documents

โ€ข Uses copier and computers

โ€ข Answers telephone

โ€ข Shelves material

โ€ข Assist patrons and processes MeL library loan

โ€ข Solves patron problems encountered during their library visit

โ€ข Monitors library supplies for ordering

โ€ข Creates marketing and promotional material

โ€ข Merchandises books and other library materials to enhance their appeal and promote their use by patrons

โ€ข Facilitates programming, as needed, in skill set

โ€ข Inspects library materials for repair and may assist in repairing and/or processing library material

โ€ข Performs general cleaning duties in the library including shoveling and sweeping sidewalks and taking out garbage.

  • Manual dexterity to operate computer and telephone equipment
  • Satisfactory criminal background check
  • Willingness to attend community events and training/workshops outside of the library
  • Valid driverโ€™s license and personal automobile for job-related transportation

Acceptable Experience and Training:

โ€ข High school diploma or GED

โ€ข Graduation from a college or university preferred

โ€ข Public library experience preferred

โ€ข Experience with Google apps, Word, Excel, Canva and other application software

โ€ข Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
