History of the Library

Early History

The Millington Arbela District Library operates as an independent public library, serving the residents of Millington and Arbela townships in Michigan.

Founded in 1938 as the Millington Township Library, it later contracted with Arbela Township to extend library services to Arbela’s citizens.

Over the years, the library occupied various locations within the Village of Millington. In 1970, it found a permanent home at 8530 Depot Street, Millington. A 1991 expansion increased the building’s size by approximately 25%.

Reorganized as a District Library

In 2003, the library was restructured as the Millington Arbela District Library following the approval of a voted millage. In 2004, the library purchased its existing building from Millington Township and promptly began renovations.

A significant renovation to add an accessible front entrance commenced in 2019 and was completed in 2020.
